Course Overview
  • 24 hours of instruction across three days.
  • Sequential, practice-centred format: frame the brief, deliver the message, apply the craft.
  • Day 1 — purpose and audience, structure and visual aids, slide craft.
  • Day 2 — briefing essentials, delivery techniques, intelligence briefing formats.
  • Day 3 — applied briefing exercise and capstone.
  • No multiple-choice exam; assessment is a hands-on capstone judged against defined competency criteria.
Prerequisites
  • Experience supporting intelligence, operational analysis, research or data-driven assessments.
  • Basic presentation and communication skills, and familiarity with slide-based formats.
  • A laptop with presentation software able to work with PowerPoint (.pptx) files, and reliable internet.

No advanced technical or analytical software experience is required — briefing materials, examples and course resources are provided.

What You'll Learn

Understand purpose and audience — identify the purpose of a briefing and determine what the audience needs to know.

Structure an intelligence brief — organise information logically and use BLUF and content prioritisation to carry the essential message.

Use visual aids effectively — select charts, diagrams and other aids that aid understanding, including appropriate representation of uncertainty.

  • Craft clear, focused slides — apply layout, visual hierarchy, consistency, spacing and content discipline.
  • Refine briefing content — decide what must be included and remove what does not serve the purpose.
  • Deliver the brief effectively — guide the audience with effective speaking and presentation technique.
  • Manage questions and discussion — respond while keeping clarity, focus and control.
  • Apply briefing skills in practice — integrate the whole course into the capstone brief.
